Frequently asked questions
Are the raw materials used to make Onyx & Green products eco friendly?
Many of their pencil cases and school bags utilize natural and recycled fabrics that are not only biodegradable and recyclable, but are practical and durable, from the day you get them to the day you recycle them. They also highly encourage upcycling when possible. This has inspired their recycled products line, with items like post-consumer recycled paper, post-industrial recycled plastic, recycled rubber, newspaper, PET bottles, milk cartons, and aluminum. By reusing these materials, their office supplies have the same durable construction, but create less waste than traditional manufacturing.
When many people think of office and school supplies, they immediately think of paper. As one of the most used office items, Onyx and Green wanted to find sustainable alternatives that could reduce harmful deforestation.
Their Stone Paper uses recycled construction site debris to create a paper product without any wood, water, or bleach. Crushed stones are converted into flawless white paper that is waterproof and tear resistant.
They also utilize sugarcane fibers for their Bagasse paper, another ecologically friendly alternative to traditional wood paper. By using the often-wasted byproducts of sugar manufacturing, they turn sugarcane into a white paper indistinguishable from traditional paper. Plus, the process uses less bleach, water, and energy than traditional manufacturing.

Is the process of making Onyx & Green products eco friendly? Are chemicals/toxins used?
As our range has several different categories, each has a different answer.
Our stone paper products in particular is manufactured in a way that is far better for the environment than regular paper. The stone paper manufacturing process has no requirement for water treatment, bleach, burning of wood or heavy chemicals in its process.
Our fabric products such as Jute and Ramie are made with natural fibres and use natural dyes whenever possible and is also far better for the environment than petroleum based nylons used in similar.
This goes for all our bamboo items as well, compared to plastic we are way ahead.
In other items such as our recycled plastic items, we are not different than any other maker except that we are using recycled materials so the process of creating the items anew is not repeated.
Is the packaging of Onyx & Green products also eco friendly?
Onyx & Green uses recycled kraft paper and recycled carton along with soy-based ink for most of its packaging.
What is Soy based ink?
The same soybeans used to make tofu and soy milk are used to create soy ink, but you definitely wouldn’t want to eat it. The beans go through an extensive process that makes them bad for eating but excellent for printing.
It has several noticeable benefits, both in its impact on the environment and the quality of your custom printing.
Excellent clarity – Soy inks have a tendency to produce brighter and sharper images than regular inks. This is because soybean oil is naturally more transparent than most petroleum-based Ink. With soy ink, you can give your logo a vibrant look that’s just not possible otherwise.
Cost-effective – The price of soy ink is comparable to petroleum-based Ink. But since printing with soy-based Ink produces especially high-intensity colours, it often requires less Ink than conventional printing. This means that with soy-based print, you’re getting the most out of your money.
Eco-Friendly Newspaper Printed with Soy Ink - Soy ink is quite popular in the newspaper industry, but its eco-friendly nature makes it useful for many different types of printing. We use it to print all Stone Paper Notebooks.
Low VOC levels – Using soy-based Ink is excellent for the environment when compared to other inks; it’s particularly notable for its low levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s), less than one-fifth of the amount produced by petroleum-based inks. VOC’s are pollutants, which evaporate in sunlight and are unhealthy for both the environment and human beings. Using soy ink ultimately produces less air pollution and health hazards.
Highly recyclable – When recycling paper, any printed ink has to be removed first. According to relatively new research from Western Michigan University, paper printed with soy-based Ink has a faster rate of dirt removal during the de-inking process, which makes it easy to recycle. Additionally, soy ink is more than four times more biodegradable than standard Ink, so even paper that isn’t recycled with have a less environmental impact.
Sustainability – Naturally, soy ink is made from soybeans, a renewable resource (unlike standard petroleum). What’s more, it’s actually made from a byproduct of soybean farming. This means that no new crops need to be harvested to create soy-based Ink. Also, soybeans require very little irrigation and only a small amount of energy to cultivate.
Will Onyx & Green products biodegrade/decompose easily after use?
Our bamboo items, stone paper items and natural fabric items will all decompose easily, our recycled plastic items will not, they should be recycled.
